Vince Gilligan Shares He Has a Plan for How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... For Now.
Vince Gilligan did not foresee that the Apple TV+ show would turn into a breakout success. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me thrilled beyond words.”
With the first season of the popular program wrapping up—and Season 2 already in development—the writers' room recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Viewer Reception
Anyone might to get swayed by the rampant praise and fan theories about Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is making a conscious effort to steer clear of all that.
“It feels like force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he describes. “It's amazing, but I learn of it through word of mouth, and that's intentional. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever want to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be never leaving the house from the hardware store and I'd never leave my living room.”
In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not influenced by what people are saying.”
“It's wiser to keep our heads down and working,” Gilligan adds.
The Central Mystery: Does the creator Know the Finale of Pluribus?
Given that the writers aren’t being guided by fan response, can we assume they have mapped out how Pluribus will reach its endpoint? The answer is yes… with some caveats.
“We have some compelling concepts about how the story could conclude,” Gilligan reveals. “but we are always ready to abandon a good idea for a more brilliant plan. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we conceive of something superior and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
On the other hand, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a rather amusing idea to fall back on.
“I constantly suggest that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why mess with the iconic TV endings?
“I'd love for Carol to wake up in bed beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan adds, smiling.
Pluribus can be watched on the streaming service.
