Israelis have gathered around the country to remember the second anniversary since the Hamas-led offensive on 7 October 2023, as discussions advanced in the neighboring country over a conclusion to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.

The attack saw over 1,200 people dead and 251 others taken away to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for Jewish people since the World War II.

Israel answered by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has taken in excess of 67,000 people, based on figures from the region's Hamas-administered health ministry. Its figures are considered accurate by the UN and other world agencies.

"Our aggressive enemies have struck forcefully, but they have not defeated us," the leader added on that day.

He also pledged to "achieve all the goals of the war: the homecoming of all the captured, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer pose a threat to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The government authorities rescheduled official remembrance events until mid-October - after the conclusion of the religious holiday season - but ceremonies still took place across the country on Tuesday.

A remembrance service for the loved ones of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas attack was conducted in the coastal city. Organized by the families themselves, it was aired on Israeli television channels.

A period earlier, a moment of silence was observed throughout the country.

Peace Discussions in Egypt

Meanwhile, Israeli and Hamas negotiating teams gathered in the North African coastal city of the Egyptian city for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the provisions of the plan.

A high-ranking Palestinian official knowledgeable about the discussions revealed that an late session of mediated discussions commenced at 19:00 Cairo time.

The source said the earlier meeting finished without tangible results, due to differences over the suggested Israeli retreat arrangements from Gaza and over assurances Hamas demands to make certain Israel does not restart fighting after the initial stage of the agreement.

He added that the discussions are "tough and have not yet produce any major advancement," but noted that intermediaries are making efforts to narrow the gaps between the both parties.

Critical Points in Talks

  • An enduring halt to fighting
  • The swap of the hostages still detained by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for humanitarian aid distribution
  • After-conflict administration of the area

Citizen Sentiment

In the city's public square that day, 29-year-old a woman - whose family member endured the attack on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were murdered and dozens more were captured by Hamas gunmen - told: "No place feels like home any longer and until each abducted person return none of us will have peace of mind."

"When we see everybody home once more, we can relax once more. Then we can begin to recover," she added.

Near the leader's official dwelling in Jerusalem, people assembled to show their backing for the loved ones of the captives. Israel says forty-eight continue in detention in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are considered to be surviving.

Protester Atalia Regev explained: "We need do whatever arrangement needed for the hostages to return. But we sincerely need guarantees that we will be protected."

Opinion polls now regularly indicate that approximately the majority of the population prefer the hostilities to conclude in as payment for the release of the abducted.

Gaza Conditions

At the site of the music event, mourners assembled to honor the dead.

From the site, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be noticed just a short distance away in Gaza, where local people reported the intense Israeli shelling persisted.

In the main city, attacks were documented in the early hours of that day in the western neighborhood, Rimal and Nasr districts and in the eastern neighbourhood of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the evening falls, the dread appears with it," evacuated urban resident a mother, whose young son was lost his life by an Israeli air strike previously, described.

"Me and my three children are afraid of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, embracing, notably my smallest child who puts his head on me all night."

"Every second we monitor the updates to see the situation. And I'm afraid that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the conflict will return to us."

Humanitarian Crisis

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City announced it had received the remains of half dozen people by the afternoon, including three killed in an Israeli attack in the south part district.

Another medical facility in the south region of that area indicated additional victims had been delivered. One of them was died by Israeli soldiers while seeking aid to the southern area, health workers stated.
