Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, commencing on the 18th of January in the city of Melbourne.
Historic Return to Melbourne Park
Tournament officials announced on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old legend will grace the courts again at Melbourne Park a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. Back in 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.
Preparing for the Australian Summer
The tennis star had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a following week, just before the start of play at Melbourne Park.
Her most recent visit in the city was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the women’s singles on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.
"I’m excited to be back in the country and eagerly anticipating playing during the Australian summer," Williams stated. "I have experienced so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to go back to a place that has meant so much to my professional journey."
