The Former French President Preparing to Release Jail Diary Documenting His 20 Days Incarcerated
Nicolas Sarkozy is preparing a memoir this autumn called Notes from a Cell, detailing his experience served in jail.
The revelation came just 11 days following the ex-leader gained freedom while he appeals his conviction related to unlawful coordination connected to efforts to obtain political financing from the government of former Libyan leader.
Life Behind Bars: Solitary Musings
“Inside jail there is nothing to see, and nothing to do,” he notes in a preview, indicating the account centers around his reflections from isolation as opposed to a broader observation on the packed and struggling correctional facilities in the country.
“Quiet is absent, which is missing in that facility, where noise is endless commotion,” he continues. “The racket is alas constant. But, just like the desert, inner life is fortified while incarcerated.”
Freedom Plea: Describing the Ordeal
During his plea for freedom, Sarkozy was present by video link from inside the facility, depicting prison life as gruelling. He stated to the judge: “I must acknowledge the correctional officers, showing great humanity, easing this difficult experience tolerable – since it’s deeply troubling.”
“I didn’t expect that at 70 years of age, I would end up incarcerated. It’s an ordeal I must endure. It’s challenging, I acknowledge, deeply straining. It has an impact on any prisoner as it’s exhausting.”
Unprecedented Situation
Sarkozy, the ex-head of state from 2007 to 2012, was the first ex-leader of an EU country and the initial post-WWII figure in the French Republic to experience jail.
Ahead of his incarceration he mentioned he would use his time to write a book.
Books in Prison
It is not certain whether he had time to go through the three books he had in his cell: a two-volume biography of Jesus plus the novel by Dumas the classic tale, a plot where an innocent man ends up incarcerated but escapes to take revenge.
Daily Reality
The former leader was held secluded due to safety concerns in a room approximately nine square meters with his own shower and toilet at La Santé prison located in the capital. Security personnel occupied a neighbouring cell.
It was stated that he consumed just yogurt during his stay due to concerns prison cuisine may have been contaminated. He had facilities to cook for himself yet he declined, as per accounts. Unclear remains whether Sarkozy will write about his dietary choices.
Defense Viewpoint
Sarkozy’s lawyer, who visited his client each day during the incarceration, stated during proceedings his safety would improve released rather than in custody. “There were death threats, heard shouts at night and emergency responses in a neighbouring cell when a prisoner self-harmed.”
Legal Proceedings
He entered custody in late October after the judiciary gave him a five-year sentence for criminal conspiracy over a scheme to obtain election financing during his election campaign.
He denies wrongdoing challenging the decision, with a new trial set for the coming spring.
