The Eurovision Song Contest Was Traditionally a Whimsical Delight – Yet It Has Evolved Into a Cynical Way to Gloss Over Warfare.

An new term came to light several months into the intensive bombing of Gaza by Israel. Referred to as WCNSF, it stands for “Child casualty without any family left”. This designation is specific to Gaza, per insights from medical experts including child health specialists. Normally, it is rare for physicians to care for a minor who has seen the death of their complete family. However, there has been nothing “normal” concerning the genocide in Gaza, where entire family lineages have been obliterated and the number of children who have lost limbs is greater than that of any other region in the world. No sense of normalcy about numerous doctors returning from a landscape of rubble with reports of children being systematically aimed at.

A Hell on Earth Regardless of a Reported Truce

The Gaza Strip continues to be hell on earth. Vital medicines and equipment are not getting in those in need, and groups like Amnesty International contend that atrocities are ongoing. The Israeli government disputes these accusations, just as it denies each claim it is implicated in. Yet as traumatised orphans are now freezing in improvised encampments, there is some ostensibly positive news: apparently nothing is going to stop the Eurovision from advancing its stated mission of “togetherness and artistic sharing.” Eurovision will continue to offer a welcoming platform for Israel, even though several European countries have now boycotted in dissent. Because this, we are told, is what international harmony manifests as.

The contest, notably banned Russia from competing in 2022 over the “unprecedented crisis in Ukraine”. But the crisis in Gaza is completely different.

A Selective Vision

Overlook the circumstance that Israel was criticized for irregular participation methods last year in what seems to have been an effort to manipulate Eurovision. Forget the fact that a three-year-old girl was allegedly fatally struck in Gaza on a recent Sunday. Neglect the data that attacks by settlers and systematic expulsions in the West Bank have escalated. Forget the fact that foreign reporters are still blocked from unfettered access in Gaza. None of this, evidently, should be allowed to get in the way of Eurovision’s cherished spirit of unity.

The Contest Continues Against a Backdrop of Staggering Tragedy

The contest reaches its seventieth anniversary next year – roughly two times the current lifespan of a person in Gaza today. The show may go on, but it will likely never recapture the pure, unadulterated fun it once represented. A contest that was originally built on harmony has now become a cynical way to whitewash war.
