The Creators of Baldur's Gate 3 Details Its Implementation of Generative AI for Upcoming Project
The studio behind popular titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin recently shown its new project, creating a wave of anticipation within the gaming community. However, subsequent comments from the studio's lead designer have introduced clarity to the conversation, touching on the studio's philosophy toward machine learning.
Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs
In a latest clarification, Swen Vincke explained that the developer is utilizing generative AI for certain preliminary purposes. These include enhancing PowerPoint slides, creating rough concept art, and drafting temporary copy.
Crucially, Vincke stressed that the final assets in the game will be crafted entirely by human creatives. "We are writing every line ourselves," he said.
Larian is continuously increasing our team of writers and are busily assembling narrative groups.
Given that this area is being particularly mentioned — we right now have over twenty visual developers and have positions available for additional creatives.
Each initiative we do is additive and designed to having people spend additional energy on actual creation.
Every machine learning application used well is supplementary to a developer's routine, never a stand-in for their talent.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The news of AI usage at first generated concern among some the community. In response, Vincke issued further elaboration on social media.
"At Larian, we employ machine learning to research ideas, in the same way we use Google and art books," he stated. "In the very early brainstorming phase we use it as a simple sketch for composition which we then replace with hand-crafted artwork."
He continued, "Our studio recruits artists for their inherent skill, not for their ability to execute what a machine suggests."
Key Areas of AI Integration
Vincke had in the past detailed the company's practical approach to AI and ML, defining its use into primary areas:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: This encompasses refining animations, audio processing, and Larian-specific work like retargeting animations.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using tools to quickly build rough versions of mechanics to experiment with concepts before expensive implementation.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Investigating how machine learning could one day facilitate innovative reactivity, particularly in managing player-driven narratives in a vast role-playing world.
He specifically stated that core creative domains — including music composition — are are in no way fields where the team is cutting creative input. On the contrary, Larian is recruiting more in these very roles.
"Our studio is neither releasing a game with any AI components, and we are certainly not considering cutting staff to swap them out with artificial intelligence," Vincke stated definitively.
