Slot Asserts He Feels Safe and Retains The Club's Support Following PSV Defeat
The Liverpool head coach acknowledged that it was natural for concerns to be asked about his position following a further convincing defeat versus the Dutch champions.
Liverpool endured their 9th defeat in twelve matches, representing the team's poorest run after being relegated in the 1953-54 season.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing night at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, things are alright, I've received a lot of support from the top,” the coach stated.
“It would be great to reverse this trend and secure a win obviously but when you're working as a coach and struggling then it's expected that people question you.”
He continued, “I'm comfortable with my position. It is not the first time I’ve been in a tough spot but it is about time that we changed our fortunes.”
Conversations with Liverpool Hierarchy
When asked to elaborate on his discussions with the Liverpool hierarchy, the head coach said:
“We communicate frequently. They are supportive for the squad and to me and we discuss these matters but they aren't calling me every single minute each day to say they have faith in me.”
He mentioned, “In the normal discussions I perceive the confidence. But I've not talked to them after this defeat yet so it remains to be seen.”
Persistent Failings and Player Response
Slot expressed regret over recurring weaknesses from his squad in their European defeat, namely poor finishing and defensive lapses.
Meanwhile, player Jones was more direct in his view of the team's situation.
“I haven't got the solutions. Truthfully, I do not. I’m saying that to everybody,” the midfielder said.
“It is not good enough. I don’t even need to wait to reflect. I’m past feeling anger internally. I've reached the stage currently where I simply lack the phrases.”
He added, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the club I love. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen this club for years.”
“In recent memory, I've not seen a Reds side enduring a period of this nature with results this poor.”
Jones concluded, “But we still have the crest on our shirts. And as long as that badge is gone, we’re always going to battle.”
“We’re going to try to bring this squad back to its rightful place, demonstrate to all again what Liverpool stands for and why people call it the greatest side in the planet.”
“However currently, we're in trouble and it needs to change.”
