In a move inspired by TV series guards, Denmark's foreign ministry has created a night watch team—far from guarding against fantasy foes, but to monitor Donald Trump while Copenhagen sleeps.

This night monitoring starts at 5 p.m. local time each day and concludes with a summary produced at 7am, which is then circulated across government departments and concerned offices detailing what was said and developments that occurred.

The role is believed to have been established following the diplomatic row involving Copenhagen and the US regarding Greenland earlier this year, when the US president threatened taking control of the strategic territory.

Observers point out that this measure is one of multiple examples of how Danish diplomacy and its civil service have had to adapt to the new reality of the Trump's current term.

A source familiar with the ministry stated, “It's accurate to say that the situation in the region and the time difference between Denmark and the United States was quite an important reason introducing this system in the spring.”

Rather than everybody having to promptly check their phones to stay informed on updates from the US, the foreign office explained it had made a collective effort to remain informed on the president's actions.

Jacob Kaarsbo, a former senior analyst at the Danish defence intelligence agency, commented that this development showed, “as we have always known,” that the notion of the United States as Denmark's primary ally was dead. “Partnerships are founded on shared principles and a mutual view of threats,” he added. “The president shares neither of those with Denmark and it can be said he lacks it with the majority of Europe.”
