Fashion legend Antony Price, the influential British fashion designer responsible for many legendary styles favored by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his defined forms and performative fashion, including the pastel suits that appeared in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the group posted a remembrance across their platforms."

This news arrives less than a month after he debuted his latest collection in London, which was his first major show in over 30 years. The performer Lily Allen showcased a dress evoking the iconic black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" historically worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price relocated to London at the start of the 1960s to attend the renowned Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing clothing for men at the label Stirling Copper and was behind the tight, button-detailed trousers that The Rolling Stones' frontman Mick Jagger famously wore during The Rolling Stones' Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.

He founded his own label in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show was launched by outfits on model Jerry Hall, who later wore the bridal gown Price designed for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Collaborations with Icons

A long-time collaborator of musical chameleon David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the singer wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His trademark skill to merge menswear and womenswear along with his masterful technique in designing form-fitting garments established him as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he started creating pieces for Camilla, now Queen Consort, including a number of outfits for her tour of the United States after assuming the title.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: Central to his design philosophy.
  • Performative Style: Shaping the look of rock and pop.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Merging menswear with womenswear.
  • Clients from Stage to Palace: Including music legends and the future Queen Consort.

Design circles mourns the loss to a authentic original whose influence on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
