American Armed Forces Executes Lethal Attack in Eastern Pacific, Leading to 4 Deaths
According to a high-ranking military official, the American armed forces carried out a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a craft linked to a terrorist group in international waters. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along a known narco-trafficking route and was involved in narco-trafficking operations. All four male drug traffickers were eliminated, and no American forces were injured.”
Context and Prior Actions
The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a naval blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. That statement on online platforms, the US president accused Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund narcotics smuggling and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military presence.
Just on Tuesday, US defense officials said it had carried out strikes on three boats suspected of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, leading to the deaths of eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 people, the majority off the coast of Venezuela.
Administration Justifies Tactics Amidst Scrutiny
The administration has encountered increasing pressure to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has defended its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has stopped drugs from entering US shores and has pushed back on concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
While the administration has said the operation is about stopping drugs headed to the US, comments from a senior aide seemed to suggest a wider political aim. In a recent interview, the senior advisor remarked the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”
This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting leadership.
