A Account of Surprising Generosity: When a Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dormitory Floor
Back in 2006, My journey took me to the Australian capital for a medical school interview. I assumed I would book lodging upon arrival, but once I got there, a large conference was taking place and every single youth hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.
Coming from the city-state of Singapore, I considered maybe I could bed down in the terminal – but soon learned the local airport, in contrast to Changi Airport, closes 24 hours. Unsure of quite what to do and growing worried, I caught a city-bound bus and began walking in the direction of the casino, reasoning I might spend those hours in an establishment operating 24/7. Admittedly, this plan in the ideal condition for nailing the admissions interview the following day, yet, as a cash-strapped student, luxury accommodation was impossible.
Our society requires more people like that woman.
Apparently, I appeared lost because a female student saw me loitering in the city and asked if everything was alright. I shared my predicament and without hesitation she said I was welcome to sleep on the ground of her dormitory at ANU – a perfect solution, considering that was where my medical school interview was scheduled for the next day. She went further by offering a meal: one of the sandwiches she brought back her part-time job. I had access to the bathroom and a protected spot and secure to sleep.
With hindsight, it’s clear to me what a big chance she undertook being a woman letting a male stranger she’d just met crash at her place. Back then I operated under my own unawareness and not even thinking to the potential danger. Now, as a father, I’m amazed she did that – but still incredibly thankful.
I didn’t end up attending that university, and I never saw that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of generosity. It is my wish karma has rewarded her act of kindness abundantly. We could all use more people like that woman.
